I'm not a Statue

I was taking pictures in the farmers' market at DuPont Circle in DC and I was looking at the street musician through my camera when he let me know he wasn't happy.  I'm generally pretty easy going about photos.  The people are far more important than the photo.

So we talked a while and so I suggested he get his advice to photographers on video so here it is.

Just out of curiousity, let's see how the YouTube video compares to the Viddler.

  1. I can understand being annoyed by people taking pictures of you, but if you're putting on a performance in a public place, you're asking people to pay attention to you, making yourself a public figure. You can't then expect people to ask before taking a picture, particularly in a tourist-ridden place like DC, probably even performing in view of a security camera.

  2. I agree with funkalunatic. The guy reminded us that he was there to make money. If the film of his act was used for financial gain by the photographer he might have a point. His attitude reminded me of those notices in historic buildings in Europe which prohibit photographs because it might inhibit the purchase of their postcards. But this performer was operating in a public space specifically for public viewing. It also follows that any consideration of invasion of private space must be superfluous.
