Mt View Forum - Interviews Patrick Flynn
The Mt. View Forum blog demonstrates today how blogs make important contributions to our local information sources. His interview with Assemblyperson Patrick Flynn covers a number of important issues: the budget, property taxes, public-private partnerships, land use planning, and utilities. All, of course, in the context of Anchorage today. It's definitely worth ten minutes of your time, if nothing else, get a sense of Flynn, to get an intelligent view of Municipal issues, and to see the Mt. View Forum blog.

thanks for the mention!
ReplyDeletei wish i would have had the guts to push him a little, and follow up a few of flynn's answers. he is only trying to be sensible, and fiscally conservative given current circumstances [the national economy going over a cliff, local sentiment swinging toward making drastic budget cuts].
flynn's a great guy, and i trust him -- but i get tired of hearing that we can't have substantial human-scale amenitites, a holistic approach to redevelopment, traffic calming, and a lot more emphasis on planning -- because we can't afford it. [while at the same time, we're working on bridges and freeways that cost hundreds of millions.]
i think smart growth, sustainability, northern design principles, and a lot more money sunk into arts and recreation programs and infrastructure would pay us back many times over in the future, by making anchorage a lot more desirable and livable. a few simple moves today could protect certain assets in perpetuity. we only get one shot at it!
part of caring about a place is a willingness to stick our necks out, even when it seems risky, and be very clear about what we can live with and what we can't.
thanks again.
