Alaska COVID-19 Count Thursday April 30, 2020 - NO New Cases

It's the last day of April.  Our second ZERO in less than a week.  That's great news.

To get a a visual sense of how we have gone over the peak and are currently headed downward, here's graph that the State has on its site.  It's much easier to read and interactive there.

New cases peaked at the end of March, beginning of April. The last death was reported April 12.   Orange represents active cases.  Blue is recoveries.  Red is deaths.  I suspect RED would be visually more consistent if it were placed between the Orange and Blue, because it would show Red declining (there have been no new deaths in 17 days.)  Here, the line keeps going higher which visually competes with the message conveyed by the Red line staying the same height.

With the State opening up more businesses and people able to get to gather in groups of ten or twenty, I'm expecting  the trend in new cases to start going up again sometime next week after the incubation time is long enough for people to get sick.  I hope I'm wrong.

The Trees And Other Plants Ignore COVID Or Maybe Revel In An Altered World

Birch
Do the trees know what's happening?  There are reports of wild animals exploring human spaces lately since people aren't around.  There are reports that the air is cleaner than it's been for a long time.

Even if the trees don't know about COVID-19, they must sense that things are different, just as the animals do.  My recent post on the book The Overstory  goes into the idea of how trees sense things and communicate with each other goes into the idea more deeply.  I recommend it.

This post stems from starting to spend more time in the yard, raking leaves, collecting branches, checking on what's out there.

From Alaska Public Media:
“The forest and nature are the therapist, and I will help guide us in having an experience,” Kruger said.
To have this experience, you don’t need to be in an altered state or believe in any particular doctrine or ideology. You just have to be fully in the moment — out here with a tangle of blueberry bushes and a thick canopy of hemlock trees and spruce.
There’s science to back this up. Outdoor mindfulness can lead to lower blood pressure and less stress hormones, among other benefits. In Japan there are even dedicated trails for spending therapeutic time outside. It’s part of the national public health system.
The Japanese expression for this translates to “forest bathing.” But it’s a practice you can do fully clothed, bundled up in a jacket, gloves and a hat.

Alaska COVID-19 Count Wednesday April 29, 2020 - 4 New Cases

Four new cases.
One Hospitalization removed. (I guess they fixed an error)
Twelve more people listed as recovered.

Professor EJR David and his family reported a research project they did to find out how many people and which people are wearing masks.  It's rough because they did classifications of age and gender and race visually.  It was in today's Anchorage Daily News.  Here are the findings:

"Overall, we found that 49.1% of all the people we observed wore face masks. The data showed that 51.2% of Carrs shoppers, 52.4% of Fred Meyer shoppers, 35.4% of Walmart shoppers and 62.2% of Costco shoppers wore face masks (see Figure 1). In terms of age group, 80% of people who looked to be below 20 years old, 62.2% of people who looked to be 60 years old or above, and 57.3% of people who looked to be between 40-59 years old wore face masks, but only 29.4% of people who looked to be 20-39 years old wore face masks. We also found that 55.4% of females wore face masks, compared to only 40.3% of males.
In terms of race, we found that 38.5% of people who looked white wore face masks, whereas 66.7% of people who looked like they were people of color wore face masks. Among those who looked black, 68.6% wore face masks. Among those who looked Native, 50% wore face masks. Among those who looked Asian, 70.6% wore face masks. Finally, among those who looked like they were “brown” (maybe Pacific Islander, Latino, multiracial), 70.6% wore face masks. We conducted a series of chi-square tests of independence and all the results were statistically significant at the p < .05 level, suggesting that the type of store and a person’s age, sex and race mattered beyond chance in determining whether they wore a face mask or not."
A great COVID-19 family isolation project.  They checked from parking lots at Carr's (Safeway), Fred Meyer, Walmart, and Costco.

My Day-By-Day Chart

There was one less hospitalization today than yesterday.  I'm assuming they made some sort of adjustment as new information came in.
