Alaska COVID-19 Count Monday April 27, 2020 - 4 New Cases, 1 New Hospitalization

After four days of two or fewer new cases, we're up to four today (well, today's number reflect what happened yesterday.)  And there's the first new hospitalization ten days.

We've have low numbers, but the governor's reopening of many businesses starting last Friday, with Anchorage's mayor following suit starting today suggests to me we're going to start seeing the numbers climb back up starting next weekend or so.

Tattoo shops are 'essential businesses' in Alaska now!  Do any of the shops tattoo Corona Virus images onto people?  With the price of oil tanked, the cruise industry tanked curtailing much of Alaska's summer tourism dollars, the governor appears to be ready to force through the opening of fishing, even though the small towns where tens of thousands of Outsiders will arrive to fish, are concerned they will be exposed to the virus and their small town health facilities, if they even have them, will be overwhelmed.  Quarantines and self distancing and masks seem to be enforced on a 'trust' basis.  By July Alaska, which has been doing relatively well in this pandemic, could well be one of the nation's hotspots.  I'm relatively confident that Anchorage's mayor will shut things back down if the numbers spike again, but I'm not that confident in the governor.  Initially his response followed closely medical recommendations, but now he's feeling the economic pressures.  Alaska thinks of itself as the state of fiercely independent folks, with the ideal being living in a remote cabin hunting and fishing and trapping one's meals.  The Iditarod is our ideal sport.  But apparently people can't even cut their own hair or survive with it a little longer or darker or whiter.  And many can't be bothered with masks.  Our good start looks doomed to me.  I hope I'm wrong.

Click on the chart to see it enlarged and focused.  But for an interactive version go to the State website.

For instance, on the lower left chart you can see daily where the new cases are from.  Two of the new cases yesterday are Anchorage and one is Fairbanks.  They don't have the fourth one up yet.  You can figure that out with the interactive chart.

My Day-By-Day Chart
(Checking the email version some people see this site on, I discovered this chart doesn't show up, except as a link.)

Did you notice that today is April 27?  Just three more days til the end of April.  I remember when I had to add April to my charts.  And soon it will be May.  Will Alaska break 600 cases in May?  A thousand?  Or will we keep our numbers low.  With early opening, I'm afraid we're going back up again.  It should take about ten days to two weeks to see if the opening bumps up the cases.

Alaska COVID-19 Count Sunday April 26, 2020 - Again 2 More Cases

The title is the same as Friday, except for the date.

New cases in Fairbanks and Sitka.  Statewide the last four days had three days with two new cases and one day with zero new cases.

Here's a link where you can compare Alaska to other states.  They grade the quality of Alaska's data B.  Only Wyoming has fewer deaths (7) than Alaska (9) among the states.  Though some US territories have fewer.

Alaska COVID-19 Count Saturday April 25, 2020 - NO NEW CASES!!

For the first time since March 16, 2020, there were no new cases yesterday!   The only number that went up was the number of recoveries - 217 - up 9 from the previous day.  This is great news.  Two weeks of no new cases plus ramped up testing to make sure the virus isn't lurking among the asymptomatic, and we're good.  Of course, with people traveling in and out of the state, we have to continue being vigilant.  My daughter sent an article that argues that if 80% of people wear masks, we can halt the spread of the disease.  Most masks on infected people will stop the spread from them.  Protecting from the droplets takes better masks.

I got an email from a reader saying that the email version of the blog was going crazy with the State charts. It does seem that by now, regular readers have seen that chart enough to know if they want to play with all the interactive abilities.   So I'll just put up the screen shot to record the basic numbers and a link to the State site where you can see the interactive chart, plus several more.  Here's the link to the State Charts.  Unless anyone wants me to keep posting it.

Click on this one to enlarge and focus and go to the State site to interact with it and see the data in more detail as well as other cool charts.  As you can see here today - I've clicked on the "New Cases" option in the top right of the chart instead of leaving the default "Total Cumulative Cases."  Also, in the test chart (to the left of Hospitalizations and Deaths) I go to total cumulative tests and then open the previous day's number.  I'm doing that because they've adjusted previous day numbers, sometimes radically.

Seth Abramson Outlines How Trump's Coronavirus Response Is Related to His Company's Business In China, Huge Loans He Owes China, And The Trade Deal

It's a long thread, but well worth reading.  Abramson has written two books on Trump - Proof of Collusion and Proof of Conspiracy.  He wrote both by stitching together thousands of news reports, pulling together details into a coherent story about Trump's corruption.

What's A Twitter Thread?
It's a group of Tweets linked together that allow the writer to present a longer story than a single tweet allows
The intro of this Twitter Thread goes over some of those stories to put Trump's current actions with China and the Coronavirus into context.

I guess Trump is trying to demonstrate the maxim that if you commit big enough crimes you don't get caught.

Basically, Abramson outlines when Trump learned of the Coronavirus (in November while working on a trade deal with China), that Trump (or his companies) owes China tens of millions in loans that are coming due tsoon, and how all of this adds up to a conflict of interest and using the office of the presidency for personal gain of such a magnitude that it boggles the mind.

And all his antics at the so-called press conferences are simply diversions to not only shore up his base, but also to divert attention from the most serious, but more complicated abuse of office that's going on.

Abramson's background is in law and journalism.  The story is so stupefyingly huge that Trump might just get away with it, because people aren't ready to take the time to put the pieces together.  That's why we need people like Abramson.  Like everything else he does, it's so outrageous that it seems like has to be made up.

I'll give you some of the tweets in this long thread - here's where you can just read it straight through yourself.
