The screenshot below is hi res so you can click on it and see it much larger and sharper.  But it's an image, so it's not interactive.  The much bigger version below  is interactive.

You can scroll right to see the rest of the chart below.  But remember to scroll back to the left to see the rest of the post.

In Passing - Dunleavy Recall Shifts Gears, Alaska Airlines Extends Elite Status To December 2021

Recall Dunleavy campaign adjusts to Corona virus

The recall campaign was set to get its 70,000 plus signatures pretty fast this year.  Then the virus and its social distancing requirements slowed things down greatly.
I have to acknowledge that Gov. Dunleavy has done reasonably well on the regular briefings on the Corona Virus.  He knows things.  He doesn't ramble too often.  And most importantly, he lets his superstar medical director Dr. Anne Zink explain things in her clear yet in-depth and dispassionate manner without interrupting her.  Or maybe he just looks good in comparison to someone else.
But off camera he continues to act in ways that remind us why so many people want him recalled - such as the $500,000 no bid, surprise contract for distance ed to a Florida organization.  And his recent vetoes of so much of the budget.

The recall campaign is now mailing petitions to people's homes.  Below are links to get your petition:

Thank you for working with us to save Alaska. ðŸŒŸ

Alaska Airlines extends people's elite status until December 2021.

Alaska Airlines sent us a congratulatory letter letting us know we had reached elite status back when we were flying to LA once a month when my mom, in her 90s, was not doing well.  We even got to MVP Gold two years.  With grandkids in San Francisco and Seattle, it's not hard getting our 20,000 miles for MVP each year now.  (Along with donations to organizations fighting climate change as a form of carbon offset.)

MVP offers us a few perks worth having:
  • early and better selection of seats when booking (though this has deteriorated a bit)
  • occasional upgrades to premium seats or first class
  • frequent designation as pre-check to get us through security with less hassle
  • early boarding flights
  • a phone number that gets us to an operator without any wait when we need to call
So with flying questionable this year for many people, getting MVP this year didn't seem likely.  Until Alaska Airlines emailed yesterday to say it would be extended through next year.  Thanks.

Today's email was that food service was pretty much ended on flights for the time being on flights under 350 miles and a water bottle for longer flights.  But that merely limits unnecessary closer than 6 foot contact.

I'd note that I'm not comfortable with the term 'elite status.'  I guess in part because Conservatives throw around the word 'elite' to indicate anyone with an education and because it is something of a class distinction in our supposedly classless society.  But I don't see any Republicans refusing to take advantage of the perks that come with MVP.  Nor do I see egalitarian Democrats refusing their upgrades either.

Alaska COVID-19 Count April 9, 2020 - 9 New Cases, No New Deaths Or Hospitalizations

I've made an important new discovery today on the State charts.  I've been tracking these here because the State was replacing the previous day's charts with the new chart, so there was no way to go back and see the previous data.

BUT I WAS WRONG.  The new interactive charts that began April 2, 2020 have a row on the top that lets you go back and look at earlier dates.  I've gone through my screenshots and in some cases I had that row and in other cases I didn't.  Because of the scrolling nature of the charts, it's easy to scroll to a point where the option to pick other dates is hidden.

But I want people to know THAT YOU CAN LOOK AT CHARTS FROM PREVIOUS DATES now.  As I played with it, it goes back to April 1, 2020.  It's at the top of the page.  This isn't too clear here, but it should help you find it in the interactive chart on the state site and further down in this post.  You can pick various different options besides statewide.

It's great to discover this option.  But I think my charts - the calendar one below and the day-by-day chart at the bottom are still useful ways to see the progression of COVID-19 in Alaska over time.  And, from what I can tell, the bar above only goes back to April 1, 2020.

Today, I've made sure I had the bar on top where you can choose to see different days in the screenshot below.  You can click on it to enlarge and focus, but it's not interactive.   Click on the image to enlarge and focus.

The chart below is interactive - from the State site - and you can use the bar on top to look at the data from past dates (to April 1).  The chart scrolls to the right.  To see the rest of this post, you have to scroll back to the left.

It seems we keep adding cases daily, but not in ever increasing numbers.  The peak was 22 on April 7, but it was back down to 13 on the 8th, and 9 today.  The number of recovered cases jumped today to 17 from 32 yesterday to 49 today.  Isolation seems to work.  Our death rate is not increasing by much.  Most days have been zero.  The highest jump was 2 on only one occasion.  Two of the seven Alaskan deaths were residents who contracted the virus and died Outside (of Alaska.)   I have my fingers crossed.  (I realized, as I wrote it, that crossing fingers is part of the legacy of superstition that we still practice, even if only metaphorically to mean "I hope.")

Do It Yourself Matzahs For Pandemic Pesach

The shopper texted that there were no matzahs the other day.

So, we just had to make our own.  Google helped with a couple of recipes and this one looked easiest.

After mixing the flour and water and kneading, it said to cut the ball in half, and again, and again, until there were eight pieces of dough.

Then flatten them with a rolling pin - thinner and thinner and bigger and bigger.

Then into the oven quickly.  Two minutes per side.

We baked several times to get all eight done.

They don't look anything like what comes out of the box.  Much more exotic looking.

[UPDATED April 8, 2020 8:15pm:  We ended up with a clean table cloth, the old candelabras, the kiddush cup from our wedding, and an abbreviated Seder.  It was a great break from our self-isolation to observe an ancient ritual during this time of pandemic.  And to remember the ten plagues in Egypt as the Jews fled the Pharaoh.  It broke the routine and put today into a much larger perspective. Even if it was just the two of us this year.]

Alaska COVID-19 Count April 8, 2020 - 1 New Death, 13 New Cases, 3 New Hospitalizations

Not much extra to add beyond the charts themselves.  The state site has a comprehensive list of the locations of all the cases.  Anchorage has a 40% of Alaska's population and 45% the state cases (103/226).  Fairbanks has 13% of Alaska's population and and 31% of the total cases (71/226.)  Is this because Fairbanks has done more testing?  Or because Anchorage's hunker down order came early and slowed the spread?  Or both?
