Life moves along and things I've blogged about evolve.
An LA Times story the other day says a settlement looks close in the lawsuit against an LA vote to require porn actors to wear condoms. The original post was in 2012 when voters approved the measure, and there was a follow up in 2013 when the first court decision came out. Apparently the condoms will stay, but the enforcement will be weaker.
And this year's Anchorage Folk Festival poster was done by Paxson Woelber, who I interviewed in 2009 when two of his short animations were in the Anchorage International Film Festival.
And don't miss the last night of the festival - Sunday, starting at 7pm at Wendy Williamson auditorium at UAA. Jeffrey Broussard & the Creole Cowboys will play again. The festival is free and it's one of the events that makes Anchorage a great place to live.
Is this part an update? Well, the poster leads to the festival and I've got posts from previous folk festivals.
2015.
2014.
2011.
2011. This one has Kabala Shish Kebab.
2008. Cajun and Creole is pretty popular up here.
There's a bit of video from Friday night to give you a sense of what they're like. And only a sense, since I recorded this with my tiny Canon Powershot. If you go to the festival, you'll get to hear their sound for real. They'll be a number of other acts before them, you can come when you want. Friday the auditorium was packed.

Warm, Sunny January Day Ends At Folk Festival
A quick post. Got up early and had class from 9am-1pm. Good students, interesting sounding projects.
When I got out after class the sun brightened everything and it felt like spring. A balmy mid-forties made me want to find an outdoor table to have lunch.
But all these warm days have turned the streets to water and ice.
We were able to catch the headliner act at the second week of the Anchorage Folk Festival - appropriately, Mr. Sun. The Wendy Williamson was packed. The festival goes on Saturday and Sunday and admission is free - but leave some money to help pay for things if you can.

"What's the Difference Between an Onion and an Accordion?"
Robert Mihalek at the Cincinnati Enquirer quotes button accordion master John Whelan's answer:
I know that lots of people wince at the thought of an accordion, but when you have the best in the world at anything, it's worth checking out. Whelan was at the end of a long day of music at the Wendy Williamson Auditorium at UAA. We got there in time to hear the act before Whelan and then Whelan.
It's not easy to see, but try to watch those fingers on both hands flying at the same time.
It all starts again next weekend at the Wendy Williamson (link to schedule), but there are events happening all week all over town. Check out the Anchorage Folk Festival website for more details.
Next weekend's headline group is Seattle's gypsy jazz group Hot Club Sandwich.
For those who complain about the economy and the cost of living, there's no excuse for not taking advantage of this great entertainment with no admission charge. (But they are more than happy to take donations.)
“People don’t cry when you chop up an accordion.”Had anyone gone onstage last night to try to chop up John's accordion, people would have cried and probably done a lot more.

Savoy Family Cajun Band - Anchorage Folk Festival
We got to catch the end of the Anchorage Folk Festival and hear the Savoy Family Cajun Band. This free, two weekend festival of music, held at the Wendy Williamson - the same venue as Revelation Now a couple weeks ago, and the Sierra Leone Allstar Refugee Band last year - has been happening close to 20 years now. Lots of great music.
Here's a peek.
