Our early morning flight was on a plane that had a couple of inches of snow on the wings, not to mention snow on the windows.
But the deicing machines came and cleared the snow and ice off. There's a short Smithsonian video about deicing planes at the Anchorage International Airport. Interesting tidbit in the video is that the Anchorage Airport has never been shut down because of snow.
And once we were up in the air, we went through a fantasy world of clouds.
The video does a reasonable job of capturing magic of flying through this cloud forest.
In Seattle the ground was wet, but the sun was out. We took the train to the ferry and the ferry to Bainbridge, where we still had a magical cloudscape.
Good to see you're up and out to the Island again. Alaskans always do need that break once in a while. As for us, we just had a great meeting with an historical building organisation in Belfast working on restoring a 19th c industrial steel warehouse to a multi-arts community space.
ReplyDeleteWe had attended a tour of the space several months ago, had a good chat with an architect then and were later invited to talk of our experience in re-using an abandoned building -- we were up for it and met today with two board members and a staffer to discuss ideas on the space.
It was great to be 'in the chair' once more! Enjoyed the time together and now we're tasked with coming up with some US foundation leads for funds. We do know several and will do our approaches in the coming months.
But what happened agterwards was a particular delight -- it turns out the young staffer with us approched us by email afterwards about speaking to a programme on the general themes of 'Activism' in theory and practice. May be an honoraria involved and a bit of 'old guys talk about the bad ol' days' kinda talk from our angle.
So, as this historical building project gets off the ground and/or this bit of discussion on activism, it's all good. It was a reminder we really do know a hell-of-a-lot and hope to still pass on some tricks for making things happen while we're still about this good Earth.
Enjoy some time away from Alaska!
Never flown, but, clouds are always interesting, unless they are flatulence from magats.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike. I've enjoyed some of your comments over the past year, but this whole thing of name-calling... it seems so widely-done in the States now. Is this part of the whole thing happening there? Everyone insulting everyone, it seems?
DeleteI left 18 years ago and don't get back to your side of the Atlantic very often and really have noticed this change... troubling.
Jakob in Ireland, magats in America only live and survive in the slime and if you feel the need to engage them, you need to get slimy with them. They cannot exist in the real world. They prefer an imaginary world where what they hear and say is considered to be the one and only truth. In my life I have worked any number of dirty disgusting jobs, so for me, getting slimy is no biggie. I ionly speak for myself.
DeleteHi Mike. Yeah, I asked because I sat for 3 hours at a piper's concert next to a fella from panhandle Florida a few days ago. After our handshakes, he went on to tell me WAY too much of what he thought about Trump's enemies. It was really angry stuff and NOT welcome at an Irish music session. I just let him talk and tried to enjoy the music.
DeleteAmerica must be really hard these days for way too many folks.
In my America magats refuse to be ignored. They are in your face constantly in person or on social media. I am sorry you have to see and feel it over there.
ReplyDeletedrumpf's foolhardy choice for AG. Gaetz is out of the running and likely will be replaced with a n even less qualified candidate than one with zero qualifications.
