Alaska COVID-19 Count Monday April 27, 2020 - 4 New Cases, 1 New Hospitalization

After four days of two or fewer new cases, we're up to four today (well, today's number reflect what happened yesterday.)  And there's the first new hospitalization ten days.

We've have low numbers, but the governor's reopening of many businesses starting last Friday, with Anchorage's mayor following suit starting today suggests to me we're going to start seeing the numbers climb back up starting next weekend or so.

Tattoo shops are 'essential businesses' in Alaska now!  Do any of the shops tattoo Corona Virus images onto people?  With the price of oil tanked, the cruise industry tanked curtailing much of Alaska's summer tourism dollars, the governor appears to be ready to force through the opening of fishing, even though the small towns where tens of thousands of Outsiders will arrive to fish, are concerned they will be exposed to the virus and their small town health facilities, if they even have them, will be overwhelmed.  Quarantines and self distancing and masks seem to be enforced on a 'trust' basis.  By July Alaska, which has been doing relatively well in this pandemic, could well be one of the nation's hotspots.  I'm relatively confident that Anchorage's mayor will shut things back down if the numbers spike again, but I'm not that confident in the governor.  Initially his response followed closely medical recommendations, but now he's feeling the economic pressures.  Alaska thinks of itself as the state of fiercely independent folks, with the ideal being living in a remote cabin hunting and fishing and trapping one's meals.  The Iditarod is our ideal sport.  But apparently people can't even cut their own hair or survive with it a little longer or darker or whiter.  And many can't be bothered with masks.  Our good start looks doomed to me.  I hope I'm wrong.

Click on the chart to see it enlarged and focused.  But for an interactive version go to the State website.

For instance, on the lower left chart you can see daily where the new cases are from.  Two of the new cases yesterday are Anchorage and one is Fairbanks.  They don't have the fourth one up yet.  You can figure that out with the interactive chart.

My Day-By-Day Chart
(Checking the email version some people see this site on, I discovered this chart doesn't show up, except as a link.)

Did you notice that today is April 27?  Just three more days til the end of April.  I remember when I had to add April to my charts.  And soon it will be May.  Will Alaska break 600 cases in May?  A thousand?  Or will we keep our numbers low.  With early opening, I'm afraid we're going back up again.  It should take about ten days to two weeks to see if the opening bumps up the cases.
