Over in Britain, we just suffered an historical shift in electoral politics akin to Nixon's reset of the Old South and its Dixiecrats -- Red Labour seats, going back as far as 100 years, have become Blue Tory seats. Our prime minister understands his opportunity and will now work to consolidate this shift permanently, just as multi-generational Democrats moved to god & country, aspirational Republicans in America in the 70s.
I bring this up as the USA moves to impeach & convict its sitting president for what many think 'conduct unbecoming'. You have a mountain to climb if the story in the Guardian (US edition, 16 Dec) this morning reports the American split accurately:
"On ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Adam Schiff, chair of the House intelligence committee, said: “If anything this president’s conduct is far worse than anything Nixon did, far more sweeping in its obstruction of accountability, far more damaging to our national security and the cover-up that was Watergate.”
and...
"Asked how he could square his predetermination of the outcome of the trial with his role as an impartial juror as laid out in the US constitution, Paul said: “This is a very partisan thing. This is a disagreement, people on the Democratic side don’t like President Trump so they decided to criminalise politics.”
So that's what it's come to, then. It's all just 'politics as usual' as both our countries 'nation-first' parties fight to reset just what that 'usual' is.
I fear for both our nations.
My sense is that there is a lot happening that the media is not reporting. They're fixated on Trump tweets and presenting both sides. While the Trump supporters are ardent, they represent a (big) minority. If we have fair elections, free of: outside propaganda, voter suppression, hacking of voting machines, etc. - I'm confident Trump would lose. Even with those things he could lose. The anti-Trump side is just as passionate and they know they are right. The pro-Trump people, in their hearts, know he's a lying, cheating, philanderer.

Steve, on a personal note observing what is going on in the USA, I should tell you this.
ReplyDeleteI called a US-based credit card company yesterday to close an account we've held for 30+ years. It was tough in sentimental ways as it's tied to our Alaska Airlines reward miles program. (It felt SO un-Alaskan!)
So I was more than a little surprised, in talking with the two call centres to close our account, that both agents of Bank of America mentioned the impeachment. Their comments were totally unprompted, and shocking in the main. Each agent, in turn, made disparaging remarks about the House Democrats for their work to investigate and charge President Trump of acting criminally.
When I mentioned to one of them, that I was a Democrat and customer, they (she) still carried on with remarks. Really, this is what happened!
It was strange.
Is this how bad it's gotten there?
I would get rid of my Bank of America Visa card if it didn't have Alaska miles attached, and if I had time to do my homework and find a more people friendly card. I do find the comments of your call center agents shocking. I hope you reported them.
ReplyDeleteNo, closing that account was our swan song. No more ties to the United States of America. My AK Driver's License expires on my birthday next year; AK voter registration going back to 1972 has been closed. No Credit Union 1 accounts, and one last filing with the IRS in 2020.
