Reviewing Comments

I've long taken the position that my preference was to leave comments unreviewed. They get up faster and take less of my time. That policy fits my general sense of free and open debate. However, I reserved the right to turn on 'review comments' if people violated my trust that they would post civil and respectful comments.

Well, yesterday I turned on the review comment feature. Anonymous (there appear to be at least two and maybe more - but one in particular I think that has led to this) has been posting long, rambling comments. OK, some people are better speaking than writing. I give people slack on that. I was more concerned about the tone when the comments first started appearing about a week ago, but they seemed to have some substance that was of relevance, though it was hard to be sure. They also made blatant, but unsubstantiated, allegations and characterizations about people that had a tone of self-righteousnous that bothered me. And they were repetitive. But I was hoping that they would evolve into more civil and informative comments.

One goal of this blog is to have a civil discussion. By this I mean that people are respectful of each other and the people they write about. That people present evidence for their allegations. They don't call each other names. They read what others write and respond directly to the parts they disagree with and explain why.

Yesterday there was another blizzard of comments that didn't meet any of those criteria. There are much worse comments on other blogs and this commenter does have something in mind. I was hoping he would reveal that with enough time. But I've had enough. Any single comment hasn't been that far over the line and I've left them up - about fifteen posted comments so far. But cumulatively they change the tone of this blog. I've criticized the ADN for not moderating their blogs and so I just decided the time I hoped wouldn't arrive, had arrived.

There are about ten comments awaiting approval now. I've discovered that Blogger gives me the choice of accepting or rejecting each comment. I can't even use the select and copy and paste feature.

Here's a part of a comment that is waiting for me to accept or reject. There are five or six more separate comments that appear to be from the same anonymous commenter awaiting approval:

Why should any ANON trust you, some have seen how the truth can be twisted when Ted is involved, and the raw power, for all most know you are just another in the TANK FINK for Ted, you showed your true colors, you think people are so gullible to trust you, & you think any are going to come to some sucker like you, as you delete this and other posts to slant things…
Like why would any even come to your and spill the whole thing. . .who in the hell are you, you proved you can’t be trusted, have some agenda. (LIKE CLUB TED, CLUB WEV)

Some bon Vo play boy with rich travel Money, you don’t mean shit to most hard working Americans, they see you as the reason why Alaska is seen as a big sucking machine to leave the US taxpayers the tab. SEF tax slaves.

One could argue that the commenter has some legitimate points and I shouldn't be picky about style. But the style here is a not-listening style. This person has lots to say, but doesn't seem ready to listen. The comments jump to conclusions without telling us how he got there. In the passage above he suggests he's talking for people other than himself ("most hard working Americans.") I've chosen this part because I'm the subject of the commenter's attack. So I'm posting those comments for all to see what he said. (There's more like that in other comments in the queue.) I'm not rejecting these because he is critizing me, but because of how he is talking about me and others. Being the subject of his ire also gives me more perspective on what he's saying about others.

So, I'm going to invite all posters to do a few things if they want me to push the accept button:

1. Be respectful of others. If you think they've done something wrong, identify the specific act that was wrong and point to specific evidence. If there is no specific evidence, point out the circumstantial evidence that leads you to your conclusion. For example in the second part of the snippet above, I think that you are saying something like, "Steve, your traveling suggests to me that you're rich. That reinforces people's image of Alaskans as sucking up all their tax dollars." Then I could ask in response:
  • How do you define rich? How much money does one have to have to be rich? $1,000, $10,000, $100,000, $1,000,000? A billion?
  • Is being rich bad? Don't most Americans strive to be, if not rich, at least comfortable? Don't they continue to vote for rich politicians?
  • Do you differentiate between people who got their money from corruption and scam and those who worked for it and made good decisions about how to use it? Or whether they spend it for luxuries for themselves or to help others?
  • And by the way, it costs a lot less to live three months in Thailand than it does to live three months in Anchorage. And if you read the blog carefully, you'd know our lifestyle there was pretty modest - bikes and walking were our main form of transportation and we were in a modest two room apartment which cost less than $10 a day. And those certainly weren't pictures of first class in the plane.
I'm not saying you have to write the way I write, but that you present your points rather than making slurs so that people can respond sensibly.

2. If you make allegations about others, present evidence.

3. Try not to repeat yourself too much.

This is not hard. The only comments I've deleted over the last two and a half years were spam and other ads that had nothing to do with the post.

Now let me address a reasonable challenge: Don't you believe in free speech? Why are you for censorship?

First, I'm a private citizen writing a blog. I'm not the government. The First Amendment protections of free speech are about the US government abridging free speech. It doesn't say that every private citizen who writes something has to also publish everything anyone else wants to say. If you need to tell the world your story, start your own blog. You already have access to a computer and setting one up is free on blogspot.

Second, the point of free speech and debate is for people to listen to different points of view, different facts, and to have conversations so that people from different perspectives can gain insight. After reading your posts for almost a week now, it's my sense that you are interested in the giving part of debate but not the listening part.

If you have something to say to me personally, email me. There's a link in my profile. Show me that I'm wrong and that you are reasonable and listen and adjust your perspective when warranted. Show me you can talk to someone without either buttering them up with compliments or slamming them with insults. That you can find a place somewhere in between - like polite normal conversation. Hotmail and others offer free email accounts that are reasonably untraceable. Certainly I couldn't trace them.

Since blogger makes it extremely difficult to edit comments, and since people would probably accuse me of distorting their comments if I did, I'll just make a judgment on all the incoming posts to either allow or delete. That's just the way it is. I'd rather have the comments go up right away. As I say, you can start your own blog if you don't want to conform to the standards I'm setting for my blog. I appreciate your visits here because they have pushed me to think through this more than I have before.

[I would note that I did accept a comment in the previous post on anonymous commenters that speculated that someone had skipped his meds. I thought about it before pushing accept. I think that mental illness is a serious and poorly understood issue everywhere. And medical science doesn't know that much and treatments can sometimes be worse than the original problem. ]

  1. Why are you so sure that that anonym person is a he? I am not so liberal about free debate. I may sound medieval but I think censorship is necessary in some way.

  2. "What do I know", is the touch stone of this WWW.( "I" some begging the questing tone)
As one Senator noted, in the Watergate Hearings as to the President's men:
"What did they know, and when did they know it" ....? It was something to find out. They all had to search, and make sure no dark cracks that hide things. Or, as some President once said. "There he goes again.". Here we go again on that very thing.
The truth is something some have a passion to find, some others could care less.(APATHY abounds, sadly in the offices of some so called reporters--and T. V is info-tainment)
Here is something to see if any in Ak, not only Mr Steve(WWW site Master) is interested in testing the truth, and fully searching for it
We have been told in the press, in headlines screaming out there is some April
15, 2008 hand written notes from some unnamed lawyer(in the DOJ) as to the interview of Bill Allen, the crook, and convict, and ex best friend of Ted Stevens, and when those notes did not pop up in the office of Stevens' $ 3 million lawyer in D. C, that was used as a basis to toss the jury conviction of Ted Stevens..(In April 2009, about one year later)
    So, who--all-- was at the interview of Allen,(all the what when where, copies etc etc) on April 15, 2008, and was Mr Allen's attorney there, and oh get this;
Mr Bundy is right in Anchorage(Allen's Esq):

    See:

    http://www.bundylaw.com/

So, Steve, Wev, all on 6th Ave or Artic Circle out near the Mall, call up Mr Bundy ask for a copy of the notes,(AND PUT UP here like the big APPLE photos) why are we kept in the dark---the readers of Steve's WWW site.
All the spin has been spread over the full world press on those notes,(just a reference to--some spin, yet not the actual notes) they( in passing were spun by Brendan, but no notes to see --like here etc.)so is Steve spining the word "rich:" and as spun by Stevens' $ 3 million powerful connected D C firm.(Yes, the Appropriation Committee must be a wonderful power spot).
Can some of you handle the full truth, have a passion for it, want to find it, want to know ?
Have at it, if you truly care.(or you could go shopping at the Mall, instead)
If I am in the category of the stinging Steve arrows, then it was for a purpose, to see if he was really truly, and genuinely a person who wants to know, or is he one who cares not to, & not to be one of those persons who cares to truly know, or is it more of a care less not to know.(at the end of the day). Given the all.......?
So, it is in your hands, in Steve's AK hands, if you call up Mr Bundy, and he has no copies of the notes(or so says that), then that is strange, If you call up Eric Holder(AG who tossed the jury conviction--by a jury of citizens) and he won't give you a copy of the notes, then very bizzare, and if you see nothing in the Anchorage Daily News on a copy, it is really getting twilight zone. After all they put up a cc of Ted's note to Wev, and other hand written notes all over cyber-ville, and notes, etc, and exhibits, all on the WWW ADN web site.
So, fellow citizens, this is a collective search for the truth--if any care truly about it.
Why won't I give Steve the subject notes, or am i one among other anon's, and other ?
Look, Steve said he has a WWW on What he "knows", but what does he care to find out(in the all of...), that some are keeping in the dark, is as big a question, and how hard is he willing to search for that now fully illusive truth, the full truth ?
Is Steve trained in the justice system to search, or is it all some pondering in the vast musing of vapor, or cyberspace, or static electrical beams since he has a WWW site.
Some are not sure Steve truly cares for the full truth,(hmmmm, could that be, and) we really wonder. Look, at how he chacterizes things, and the whole on that.
Yet, he can, as a BLOG-MASTER.
But, will he take one step of effort to search for the truth, or sit in his cozy AK abode, and ponder his rich travels far away in some dream world land.
Now, he is playing like Clinton, the "what is is". How do you define "is".
Like he is rich, but others are poor serfs, just there to pay taxes on the highways to nowhere, the road to oblivion.(The great class divide)
Will Steve get off his arse to seach for the truth, its path is laid out, but will he ?
We shall find out, indeed. And, that Wev, will he care to find out(see all, etc), since he has a sister AK Blog, connected to the powerful, the Club in AK.
Should I reserve, one of those to extend and revise my notes here... How will it be treated in Steve's chamber of Ak blog-land ?

  3. As one trained to analyis blog patterns, that "failure to take meds" is a ruse(well worn, so knee jerk) to discount what a person says, by someone who has nothing to add of substance.
Are some now appointing themslves as high priest HEAD-Doctors, as if KGB land is in the mix, and oh, this is indeed getting interesting, on how this has evolved.
I thought maybe you were going to apply that same standard to Wev's site, where he became unhinged, unglued, really outer-space.
yes, you are not the GOV, not a Judge, nor the jury, not the Head poo paw, but some wonder if your claim on what comes up has any relationship to any truth in matters, or are you running some side show for the CLUB...
    We too take notes. Indeed

  4. Could it be women FBI sorts playing with Steve's head, or could it be some contractors mad as all heck, they never got the job on the bridge to the big Island real estate development near K-ican--the very rainy K-ican, where there are jokes, that school is let out when the sun comes out, the RAIN Capital of the AK, State of....big round logs.
Steve, is searching for the truth, I feel, he is interested in the truth, but the truth does not pop out, all wrapped in a pretty basket just sitting on one's desk, next to the key boards--oh, if only that was so, but it is not.
Further, we have to acknowledge that in this world, there are forces who do not want the truth to fully come out. AKA, Hello, those notes, those chaps who deep sixed, hello, this is only one layer.
    Some don't want sunshine.
I think Steve does, but he is unsure how it can be found, plus he may meet resistance to it coming out. Thus, we are at a cross roads, and it will take others to add to this community effort. Civics 101, is now here.. THE SITE: What we need to know to function as a real democracy. Don't sweat the misplaced comma, the unconnected infinitive, the sometimes less than translucent phrases.
Truth is vital to a functioning democracy, it takes citizens willing to become informed, and more than passive readers.
It takes you to find out how the Government works, or does not, FEAR NOT the truth, search for it.
you are on the frontlines---it is up to you, all of you, besides Steve.
I don't feel it is FBI women, or miffed off contractors, who are on the edge of no work, and going bellyup--that are web linked.
I think it is someone, who has been deep inside the military industrial Complex, and was in fact at E---AFB, and has been around the block a few times. In fact, I would bet my life on that.

  5. Censorship is the tool of the powerful ?
But, even without BLOCK outs, there are many other ways for the powerful to deal in info subversion, especially in zappo presto cyber-lights, and beams to slant it for the powerful.
I doubt that many in America can just take off, let some sit their house, and then go Orient.
We face a depression in America, 1000's upon 1,000's per week are laid off.(facing dire impovershipment)
But, for each dollar Ted Steven's took out of some big FED kitty, he laid that on the back of some others in American(their family--the z generation), as his uber class is blind to the cause and effect in the whole picture.
Yet, we see lectures from the elite class, on their ways, as now the chickens have come home to roost.
I don't think most in Central clique AK have the balls to face the whole truth on Ted Stevens, and how power really works, in the D C-AK axis.
Do we need lectures from the leisure traveler class, as if they hold the keys to some intercircle of knowledge and truth, a monopoly on it, when they do so little to really look for it, as demostrated, as they now weave grand diversions.
Steve has no power to know where the comments are coming from, he has not been granted that, he is now inserting himself as some judge, we are amused to see how some duck the vital, the important, as if some ruffled duck feathers,
is the more superficial, and yet the main issues are lost, in this matter.
This is about CIVICS 101, if you don't care enough about your own country, to search for the truth, then why should any even defend your apathy, some say the Constituion was
run over. Really, who was it suppose to protect, you--or the powerful Ted Club ?
Maybe Steve has the equation on costs down in the Orient, I can draw no conclusions on that limited perspective, but America is not T-land

  6. Mr, Ms, and Ms and Mr X, Y, & Z, and T:
It is most apparent, in all probability that the visitors to Steve's WWW site are deep in an NSA, and Intel monitoring of electronic message traffic, and picked up that matter big cheese, AKA the Notes from the April 15, 2008 were not provided to the big D C law firm, and thus passed on the info to spring Ted, since he had dolled out vast trillions over the years to the Nat Security complex, Agency and etc.(my big floater in wads of mula to the ORGS)
They can't come forward to News reporters in the usual course of matters, and thus have popped up here, and are posting from computers at sites that can't be traced, or are not tracable to them,(or their cut outs) and have concerns how the FBI was used by a powerful Senator...
But, then go ahead just crack it all up to some musing on some WWW site, and sit back and enjoy your bubble tea, and have a good day.
Sammy Brooks would never have found out about notes in some DOJ file, but then he is not a big powerful Senator on the Appropriations Committee.
But, then the vistors did not seem to want it to be hidden in some back river stream of electronic WWW sites.
But, then maybe this is all some dream-world on Steve's site and the vistors are on
high psychotropic drugs, since that was what Steve, was so inclined to put out, as he said, and then in a double clutch did not allow the poster to appear, and made the subtle suggestion(so cleverly of course).
Why would Steve or any others want to dig for the full truth, don't they--you all- have better things to do at the MALL, or some chic cafe, or why don't your jump to the conclusion that the vistors are really Space Aliens from the planet FAR OFF TANGO, that have hacked the electric power grid, and are just on Steve's WWW, for some Network router work.
welcome back to Earth and its electronic traffic, and meters, and wires, and switches.
