One Week Left

It's Tuesday here in Chiang Mai. We're scheduled to fly out next week on Monday non-stop to Taipei. It was a quick 14.5 hours of airtime getting here from Anchorage in January, including a close connection - they'd already closed the doors on the flight we were catching - in Taipei.

The Anchorage flight (well, it's really the New York flight which stops in Anchorage) leaves before we make it to Taipei, so we get to overnight in Taipei and if all goes well, we'll be back in Anchorage to vote on Tuesday. But there is this Redoubt thing going on. An ADN story talks about Alaska Airlines resuming flights today and mentioned 'other airlines,' but not China Air's plans. Our travel agent says China Air's contingency is Vancouver. So maybe we'll even get to Seattle and have a chance to see our daughter. Or not.

It will all work out and we'll make sure we have a good time whatever happens.

  1. Redoubt Volcano erupted again this afternoon and all flights have been stopped from about 7 PM till morning - when it is light out and planes can see plumes and airport decides safety.
Check the KTUU site as the volcano is the big news every night about all the stranded people. And groups of skiiers, high school kids, hockey team (I think they elected to just stay down in the Lower 48 as if they did get back to Anchorage, they couldn't get out for their next game!).
I can't remember how many times a week China Air lands in Anchorage, but I did see its name yesterday on the Arrivals list for the airport. First time I have seen it since last Monday when the volcano first erupted.

KTUU said that Fed Ex has laid off bunch of people at airport as no work. Off without pay. There have been 12 cargo jets in ANC in the last week, where usually there are 60 per day.

Reboubt keeps everything unpredictable! Some amazing airport stories abound - Seattle and Anc! You can get a t-shirt in Seattle that says: Kick Ash - Mt. Redoudt 2009. So, get your camera ready, Steve, and blog in Seattle airport! Some great stories, I am sure, from all those waiting standby for days! Alaska Airlines had said that the standbys would start getting out of Seattle tomorrow Wednesday, but that was before the eruption today cancelled everything for Tuesday night now!
